For last-minute bookings, we can typically confirm lodge availability within 2–4 hours and issue a full itinerary within 24 hours. In some cases, particularly when a client contacts us via WhatsApp, we have confirmed same-day departures — though we generally recommend a minimum of 48 hours notice to ensure vehicle, guide, and logistics are properly arranged.

Genuinely last-minute migration deals are rare. August and September — peak river crossing season — are typically fully booked 9–12 months ahead at all quality camps. Occasional cancellations do appear: contact us directly and we will check current availability immediately. For July and October, there is slightly more flexibility — particularly if you are open to less-famous camps or conservancy locations rather than the main reserve.

In order of typical last-minute availability: Tsavo (highest availability, year-round), Samburu (excellent most months), Lake Naivasha (consistently available), Amboseli (good outside peak), Masai Mara (good Jan–Jun, very limited Jul–Oct). Ol Pejeta has limited accommodation and requires more planning — we recommend at least 2–3 weeks notice for that destination.

When you enquire, we reconfirm live availability before asking for any payment or commitment. We do not list "available subject to enquiry" deals without being confident the space exists — it would damage our relationship with both clients and lodges.

Cancellation terms vary by deal and proximity to departure. As a general rule: last-minute bookings within 7 days of departure are typically non-refundable once confirmed. Bookings 8–30 days ahead usually carry a 50% cancellation fee within 72 hours of confirmation. We communicate exact cancellation terms clearly before any payment is requested. Travel insurance that covers cancellation is strongly recommended for all bookings.

For bookings departing within 7 days, full payment is typically required to confirm the booking (because lodges require this for last-minute reservations). For departures 8–30 days ahead, a 30–50% deposit secures the booking with the balance due 7 days before departure. We accept bank transfer, credit card, and PayPal.

Travel insurance is non-negotiable, including for last-minute bookings. Your policy must cover medical treatment, emergency evacuation, and trip cancellation. AMREF Flying Doctors emergency air evacuation coverage (~$25 per person) is also strongly recommended. Medical facilities in the Masai Mara area are limited — an emergency evacuation without insurance can cost $15,000–$25,000.

Yes — family-friendly camps frequently have availability outside school holiday peaks. During UK/US summer holidays and Easter, we recommend at least 4–6 weeks notice. At other times of year, we have organised family safaris with as little as 5 days notice. Contact us with your exact dates and group composition and we will check available options immediately.

The Masai Mara National Reserve has a minimum age policy of 7 years. Private conservancies often accept younger children, and Amboseli has no minimum age restriction. We generally recommend 6 and above for the most rewarding experience — though much depends on individual children. We ask about ages during enquiry and recommend appropriate properties accordingly.

Yes — child discounts apply even on last-minute and promotional rates. The typical structure is: children under 5 often travel free, under 12 at 50% of the adult rate, 12–17 at a reduced rate. Exact terms vary by lodge and must be confirmed at booking. Some lodges do not accept children under 7 in open-sided game vehicles — we will advise you on this during enquiry.

Yes, but less frequently than mid-range deals. Premier camps do release suites at short notice — particularly when groups cancel or when a single suite remains unsold. These are genuine releases, not a lower product. A cancellation at Angama Mara or Mahali Mzuri is still the full Angama or Mahali Mzuri experience. Charter flights from Wilson Airport to Mara airstrips can sometimes be arranged at 48–72 hours notice when seats are available. For truly last-minute fly-in safaris (24 hours), it depends on the charter operator's schedule. We arrange both scheduled and charter flights and will advise on availability when you enquire. Road transfers are always available at any notice.

Kenya requires an eTA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) for most nationalities, which replaced the visa system in 2024. The eTA costs $30 and is applied for online at etakenya.go.ke. Processing typically takes 1–3 business days. For truly last-minute travel (under 3 days notice), contact us immediately — we will guide you through the process and advise on any expedited options.

Booking last-minute through a reputable, established operator is completely safe. The risk of last-minute booking comes when using unfamiliar online platforms without local knowledge. We have been operating in Kenya since 2008 and our guides, lodges and vehicles are the same whether you book six months or six days ahead. What changes with short notice is the range of options — not the quality of what we deliver.

Yellow fever vaccination is required if arriving from a yellow fever country. Routine vaccinations (typhoid, hepatitis A, tetanus) are recommended. Anti-malarial medication is strongly advised for the Masai Mara, Amboseli, and other safari areas. Consult your GP or travel health clinic as soon as your travel is confirmed — some vaccines require 2–4 weeks to take effect, so early action matters even with last-minute bookings.

The Masai Mara's resident wildlife is year-round and exceptional. Lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, cheetah, hippopotamus, giraffe, zebra and hundreds of other species are present regardless of migration. The Great Migration is an extraordinary event when present — but the Mara without it is still one of the world's top wildlife destinations. January through June offers outstanding Big Five sightings, often with fewer vehicles and more intimate experiences.

Kenya's safari circuit — the Masai Mara, Amboseli, Samburu, Tsavo and Naivasha — is considered very safe for tourists.
