Why This Safari

Kenya’s three great ecosystems. Back to back.

Most Kenya safaris pick two parks. This one does three — and the reason it works is the fly-in format. No six-hour road transfers. No days lost to driving. You land in Amboseli by mid-morning, drive straight into the park, and by afternoon you’re watching elephant herds move across the dust with Kilimanjaro above them. Two days later you’re in Samburu — a completely different Kenya. Then two days after that, the Mara.

The three parks on this circuit are genuinely distinct. Amboseli is open, dusty, dominated by elephants and the mountain. Samburu is semi-arid scrubland along a river, with species found nowhere else on the circuit — the Northern Specials: Grevy’s zebra with their narrow stripes and large rounded ears, reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx, gerenuk standing on their hind legs to browse, Somali ostrich. Then the Mara, enormous and golden, with its prides of lion and the lingering possibility of the Great Migration. Three parks. Seven days. No wasted time.

“Samburu is the park that surprises people most. They come expecting the Mara to be the highlight — and it is — but they leave talking about the morning they spent watching reticulated giraffe on the Ewaso Nyiro riverbank.”

Day by Day

Your journey, in detail.

01

Into the Elephant Country

Fly-In · Amboseli · First Game Drive

Private transfer to Wilson Airport for the 7:30am flight to Amboseli — 35 minutes in the air. From the window, the Rift Valley escarpment, then the dry plains of Amboseli below, and already the white peak of Kilimanjaro visible on the southern horizon. Met at the airstrip and transferred to Tortilis Camp by the camp’s vehicle. Tortilis is one of Amboseli’s finest properties — named after the tortilis acacia trees that surround it, with unobstructed views of Kilimanjaro from the camp.

Morning at leisure, lunch, then out at 3:30pm for the first game drive. The Amboseli elephant herds are extraordinary — large family groups, habituated to vehicles, close enough to photograph without a zoom. Return by dusk for dinner.

Full Day in Amboseli

Game Drive · Kilimanjaro Views · Birdlife · Sundowner

Early morning game drive at 6:15am — the best light, the mountain clearest before the day’s heat builds cloud around the summit. Drive to the Kilimanjaro viewpoint: elephants on the dusty plain, the snow-capped peak above them, the light gold and pink as it rises. This is the photograph that defines Amboseli. Return for late breakfast.

Morning at leisure — Tortilis has a swimming pool, and the camp offers guided nature walks as an optional activity. After lunch, an afternoon game drive. Amboseli’s 400+ bird species are extraordinary — hammerkops, kingfishers, pelicans, over 40 raptor species. Optional sundowner at a scenic spot as the sun drops behind the Ngong Hills.

03

North to the Ewaso Nyiro

Fly-In · Samburu · Northern Specials

Early breakfast and check out, transfer to the Amboseli airstrip for the 8:10am flight back to Nairobi Wilson, then onward to Samburu — arriving by 10:30am. The landscape changes dramatically on the approach: the dust and open plains of the south give way to semi-arid scrubland, rocky hillsides, and the vivid green ribbon of the Ewaso Nyiro River cutting through it.

Samburu Intrepids Camp sits on the river bank inside the reserve — crocodile and hippo in the water below the camp, doum palms lining the banks. Arrive, settle in, lunch. Afternoon game drive at 3:30pm: first encounters with Samburu’s Northern Specials, the species that make this reserve unlike anywhere else on the circuit.

The Northern Specials

Game Drives · Grevy’s Zebra · Reticulated Giraffe · Gerenuk

The full day to learn Samburu’s particular rhythms. Early morning game drive focused on the Northern Specials — the Grevy’s zebra with their narrow pin-stripe pattern and large rounded ears, completely different from the plains zebra you saw in Amboseli. Reticulated giraffe, the most strikingly patterned of all giraffe subspecies. Gerenuk — the giraffe gazelle — standing on hind legs to browse. Beisa oryx with their dramatic straight horns. Somali ostrich. These species are found in Samburu and the northern parks; you will not see them in the Mara or Amboseli.

The Ewaso Nyiro River itself is wildlife-rich: crocodile basking on the banks, elephant crossing, vervet monkeys in the doum palms. Afternoon game drive, then back to camp for the last Samburu evening.

05

Into the Mara

Fly-In · Masai Mara · First Game Drive

Fly from Samburu to the Masai Mara — landing on the airstrip inside the reserve. The scale of the Mara hits immediately: endless golden plains, acacia silhouettes, the horizon impossibly far away. Mara Explorer Camp is a small boutique property — 10 tents — inside the reserve itself, which means you are in the wildlife rather than looking at it from outside.

Afternoon game drive: the Mara’s resident wildlife is extraordinary year-round — lion prides, leopard in the fig trees, cheetah on the open plains, elephant, buffalo, giraffe, huge herds of plains game. July to October the Great Migration arrives: over a million wildebeest and zebra, the Mara River crossings, the predator action. In all seasons, the Mara delivers.

06

Balloon Dawn

Hot Air Balloon · Champagne Breakfast · Afternoon Game Drive

Collected from camp at 5:30am — before full dark. Driven to the balloon launch site. The balloon inflates slowly, the basket fills, and then you’re up — rising silently above the savannah as the sun breaks the horizon. An hour floating over the Mara Triangle: herds below, the river catching the light, lion cubs moving through the grass, the silence broken only by the occasional burst of the burner. Land in the bush for a champagne breakfast on the plains.

Return to camp. The rest of the morning at leisure or an optional visit to a nearby Maasai village — a genuine and informative hour learning about the manyatta huts, the traditions, the cattle economy. Afternoon game drive until dusk: the Mara’s last evening.

Farewell to the Mara

Final Game Drive · Fly-Out · Nairobi

Relaxed breakfast after a final morning game drive — one last circuit of the reserve before the 10:30am flight back to Nairobi. Land at Wilson Airport where your driver is waiting for transfer to your hotel or JKIA for your international departure. You leave with three entirely different Kenyas behind you — the dust and the mountain, the river and the northern specials, the golden plains and the balloon dawn.

Accommodation

Three distinct camps. One circuit.

Each camp was chosen for its position inside the ecosystem it covers — not adjacent to it. The guides at each property know their landscape intimately.

★★★★★

Tortilis Camp

Amboseli National Park

Tortilis Camp is named after the distinctive tortilis acacia trees that dot the Amboseli landscape. The camp sits in a private conservancy adjacent to the national park with some of the most unobstructed Kilimanjaro views in the area — the mountain rises directly above the camp on clear mornings. Spacious tented accommodation, a swimming pool, guided nature walks, and a position that puts you directly in elephant territory.

Samburu Intrepids Camp

Samburu National Reserve

Samburu Intrepids Camp occupies a prime position on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River inside the Samburu Reserve. The river is the camp’s constant companion — crocodile on the banks, hippo in the pools, elephant crossing at dawn and dusk. The camp’s location inside the reserve means you’re in the wildlife from the moment you arrive, with the Northern Specials on your doorstep.

Mara Explorer Camp

Masai Mara National Reserve

Mara Explorer is a small, 10-tent boutique camp inside the Masai Mara National Reserve. Being inside the reserve rather than on its border makes a genuine difference — you’re in the wildlife ecosystem, not adjacent to it, and game drives begin from the camp itself. The intimate size means personalised service and no crowds. Day 6’s balloon safari launches nearby, and the Mara’s Big Five are present year-round.

The Vehicles

Camp Game Drive Vehicles.

Game drives on this safari are conducted in each camp’s own fleet of 4×4 safari vehicles — open-sided or pop-up roof Land Cruisers, crewed by each camp’s experienced guides and trackers who know their specific terrain intimately. At Tortilis, the guides know the Amboseli elephant families by name. At Samburu Intrepids, the trackers know the Northern Specials’ territories and routines. At Mara Explorer, the guides know where the lion prides are denning and where the leopard was last seen. An upgrade to a private vehicle at any camp is available on request.

Your Questions Answered

Everything you need to know before you book.

Road transfers between Amboseli, Samburu and the Mara would take the better part of a day each — time you’d spend in a vehicle rather than in the park. The fly-in format eliminates transfer days entirely: you land mid-morning, drive straight into the park, and have a full afternoon game drive on your first day. Seven days in three parks is achievable precisely because of the flights.

The Northern Specials are five wildlife species found in Kenya’s northern parks (Samburu, Buffalo Springs, Shaba) but not in the southern circuit (Mara, Amboseli, Tsavo). They are: Grevy’s zebra (narrow-striped, large ears — the world’s largest wild equid), reticulated giraffe (bold polygon pattern), Beisa oryx (long straight horns), gerenuk (long-necked gazelle that stands on hind legs to browse), and Somali ostrich (blue-necked). Seeing these in Samburu alongside the species you encounter in Amboseli and the Mara gives this circuit an unusual breadth.

Yes — one balloon flight per person on Day 6 is included in the package, not an optional extra. The balloon launches before dawn, floats over the Mara Triangle for approximately one hour, and lands in the bush for a champagne breakfast on the plains.

The Great Migration is typically in the Masai Mara between late July and October, with August and September the most active months for river crossings. This safari is excellent year-round — the Mara’s resident wildlife is exceptional in all seasons, and the balloon flight is magnificent whatever time of year.

Game drives at each camp are conducted in the camp’s vehicles, which may carry other guests from the same lodge. An upgrade to a fully private vehicle and guide at any or all of the three camps is available on request and priced accordingly. Many guests on this circuit choose to go private at the Mara given the balloon and the increased flexibility it allows.

Samburu is semi-arid, stark and beautiful — rocky hillsides, scrubby bush, the vivid green ribbon of the Ewaso Nyiro River. It feels more remote and less visited than the Mara or Amboseli. The Samburu Intrepids Camp sits directly on the river, which means elephant, crocodile and hippo at the waterline below camp. Many guests find Samburu the most surprising and memorable park on this circuit.

Luggage on internal charter flights in Kenya is typically restricted to 15kg per person in soft-sided bags (no rigid suitcases). We advise all guests on this itinerary on the exact restrictions for their specific aircraft when confirming their flights.

Yes. Common additions include a Nairobi night at the start or end, a beach extension in Diani or Mombasa after the Mara, adding Lake Nakuru for rhinos and flamingos, or upgrading accommodation at any of the three camps. Use Get a Custom Safari Quote to tell us what you’re looking for.
