Your arrival in Nairobi is the beginning, not a transit point. Hemingways Nairobi occupies six acres in Karen — the suburb that carries the name of Karen Blixen, whose farm once stretched across this valley toward the Ngong Hills on the horizon. The Blixen Suite overlooks the gardens, and Kilimanjaro is occasionally visible on a clear morning. Your driver meets you at JKIA and the transfer takes forty minutes through the southern suburbs, bypassing the city centre entirely.

Karen is the ideal introduction to Kenya: quieter than the city, cooler at 1,800 metres, and close to the experiences that give Nairobi its character. The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust elephant orphanage is fifteen minutes from the hotel — the morning feeding at 11:00am remains one of the most affecting wildlife encounters in East Africa, with baby orphans tumbling over keepers in a cloud of red dust. The Giraffe Centre is twenty minutes away. Nairobi National Park begins four kilometres from the city boundary — the only national park in the world with a capital city’s skyline as its backdrop, and one where lions walk beneath the CBD silhouette at dusk. We arrange all logistics for your Nairobi days; you simply choose what interests you most.

Evenings at Hemingways are unhurried. The restaurant sources from Karen’s market gardens and nearby smallholdings; the cellar is one of the finest in Nairobi. The pool terrace faces west, toward the Ngong Hills, and the light that falls across the garden at dusk gives you your first sense of the colour that Africa reserves for its evenings. By Day 4 you will be ready.

The chartered flight from Wilson Airport takes fifty minutes. You cross the southern end of the Great Rift Valley — a geological fracture running 6,000 kilometres from Mozambique to the Red Sea — before the Mara Triangle opens below you. Angama Mara sits on the escarpment at 300 metres above the valley floor. You land at the private airstrip, your guide meets you, and you are at your suite within twenty minutes. The tent has no walls on the valley side. The Mara stretches ahead of you.

Four days here is exactly right. The Mara Triangle is managed by the Mara Conservancy under stricter controls than the main reserve — lower vehicle numbers, no off-road driving, and a different quality of silence in the bush. You will rarely share a sighting. Your guide focuses on the western corridor’s resident wildlife year-round: the Angama lion pride, cheetah coalitions hunting the open plains between the river and the escarpment, and elephant families emerging at the foot of the hills at dusk. The Great Migration enters the Mara Triangle first — river crossings begin as early as July and continue through October, with enormous Nile crocodiles waiting below the surface.

Morning drives depart at 6:00am with a flask of coffee and a picnic sunrise breakfast eaten in the bush at a location your guide selects on the day. On one morning, the balloon replaces the Land Cruiser: the flight lasts approximately one hour, drifting over the waking plain as the sun rises over the Loita Hills, and ends with a champagne breakfast at the landing site. Afternoons can be spent on the viewing deck watching what arrives below, or in the spa — Angama’s treatment tents face directly out over the valley. You will not want to leave.
