An honest introduction

There is no single Kenyan safari

Two travellers can stand on the same plain at the same hour and live entirely different journeys. One waits, lens steadied, for the leopard to shift its weight. Another watches a child meet a giraffe for the first time. A third simply lets the silence settle as the sky turns to amber.

Kenya holds all of these at once. The reserves and conservancies of the Mara, the elephant herds beneath Kilimanjaro at Amboseli, the rare northern species of Samburu, and a coastline of white sand to finish. What follows is not a catalogue. it is a guide to choosing well.

Every journey below is private, hand-built by our Nairobi team, and offered here as a starting point rather than a fixed package. Read on for the types of safari, when to travel, what it truly costs, and how we plan.

When you go changes everything

A year on the plains

Kenya is exceptional year-round. Your ideal month depends entirely on what you want most.

Jan – Mar

Big-cat green season

Lush plains, newborn wildlife and superb predator action. Excellent value and the best light for photography.

Apr – Jun

The quiet emerald

Long-rains low season. Dramatic skies, few vehicles and the lowest prices of the year for the patient traveller.

Jul – Oct

The Great Migration

Peak season. River crossings, horizon-to-horizon herds and the densest predator concentrations. Book 9–12 months ahead.

Nov – Dec

Short rains, soft light

Brief afternoon showers, returning migrants and green landscapes. A fine shoulder season with festive availability.

What a safari really costs

A Kenya safari runs roughly $150 to $1,200+ per person per day. Three things move that number most: your camp, your season, and whether you fly or drive.

Budget
$150–300
per person / day
  • Tented camps & lodges
  • Group joining drives
  • Road transfer from Nairobi
  • Shared vehicles (6–7)
Most popular
$300–600
per person / day
  • Comfortable lodges & camps
  • Private game drives
  • Road or shared flight
  • Semi-private vehicle (4–5)
Luxury
$600–1,200+
per person / day
  • Exclusive conservancy camps
  • Private vehicle & guide
  • Fly-in transfers
  • Butler & premium dining

Peak season (July–October) typically costs 20–40% more than green season. Flying adds $250–450 per person return but saves 5–6 hours of road each way.
