How to get to Kenya for your safari

Most safari visitors fly into Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi — one of Africa's busiest hubs with direct connections from Europe, the Middle East, North America and Asia.

From Nairobi you connect to your safari destination via a domestic scheduled flight or road transfer. The timing of your international arrival is critical — arrive too late and you will need an overnight in Nairobi before your domestic connection. Plan it right and you can be watching elephants the same evening you land.

Wilson Airport, 6km from the city centre, handles all domestic safari flights. Air Kenya, SafariLink and Fly540 operate multiple daily services to the Masai Mara, Amboseli, Samburu and other destinations. Morning departures are the norm — most leave between 7am and 11am.

Timing is Everything

What time should you arrive in Nairobi?

Arriving before 2pm gives you the best chance of connecting to a same-day domestic safari flight — but the exact cutoff depends on your destination.

Arrive before 12pm

Same-day safari connection — most destinations

You have time to clear immigration, collect bags and transfer to Wilson Airport for an afternoon domestic flight. Most Masai Mara, Amboseli and Samburu flights operate between 8am and 3pm. A noon arrival is the comfortable minimum.

Arrive 12pm–4pm

Possible — depends on your destination and flight availability

Some afternoon domestic flights operate until 4pm. Your transfer to Wilson takes 30–45 minutes. Tight but possible for closer destinations. Safari Travel Plus will check availability and advise — do not assume.

Arrive after 4pm

Nairobi overnight required

No domestic safari flights operate after dark. If you arrive after 4pm you will overnight in Nairobi and depart the following morning. This is not a problem — plan for it and choose a good airport hotel.

Which airport do I fly into for a Kenya safari?

Almost all safari visitors fly into Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA, airport code NBO) in Nairobi. Mombasa's Moi International Airport (MBA) is an alternative if you are combining a coastal holiday with a safari in Tsavo, but Nairobi is the main safari gateway.

Do I need a visa to visit Kenya?

Yes — Kenya requires an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) for most nationalities. Apply online at etakenya.go.ke before travel. The fee is $30 USD. Processing usually takes 24–72 hours. Some nationalities require a full visa rather than an eTA — Safari Travel Plus advises on your specific requirements when booking.

How long is the flight from London to Nairobi?

Direct flights from London Heathrow to Nairobi take approximately 8.5–9 hours. Kenya Airways and British Airways both operate direct overnight services, typically departing in the evening and arriving early morning — ideal timing for a same-day domestic connection.

Can I fly direct to the Masai Mara?

No — there are no international flights to the Masai Mara. You fly into Nairobi (JKIA), transfer to Wilson Airport (approximately 30–45 minutes), and take a domestic scheduled flight to one of five Mara airstrips. The domestic flight takes 40–50 minutes. Total door-to-door from JKIA to your Mara lodge is typically 3–4 hours.

What is Wilson Airport?

Wilson Airport is a small general aviation airport 6km south of Nairobi city centre. It handles all domestic safari flights in Kenya. Air Kenya, SafariLink and Fly540 operate scheduled services from Wilson to the Masai Mara, Amboseli, Samburu, Laikipia and other safari destinations. It has a small terminal, a café and very straightforward check-in.

How much do domestic safari flights cost?

Domestic return flights typically cost between $180 and $450 per person depending on the destination and airline. Masai Mara returns cost approximately $250–$450 pp, Amboseli $220–$380 pp. Safari Travel Plus includes domestic flights in your overall safari package price — no need to book separately.

What airlines fly from the USA to Kenya?

There are no direct flights from the USA to Kenya. Common connections include Delta/KLM via Amsterdam, United/Lufthansa via Frankfurt, and Emirates via Dubai. Total journey times are 16–20 hours. We recommend allowing an arrival buffer day in Nairobi before starting your safari.

Is it safe to fly domestically in Kenya?

Kenya's domestic safari airlines — Air Kenya and SafariLink — have strong safety records. Both operate modern Cessna Caravan and similar aircraft maintained to international standards. The flights are on small propeller aircraft — expect a bumpy ride in turbulence and stunning low-altitude views of the landscape.

Can I bring my camera equipment on a domestic safari flight?
