Rwanda packs a great deal into a small, green country. Mountain gorillas in the Volcanoes, chimpanzees in Nyungwe, the Big Five restored to Akagera, and the calm of Lake Kivu between. It is the most comfortable gorilla trek in Africa, with short transfers and superb lodges. We build each Rwanda journey by hand, from Kigali to the misted slopes.
Rwanda is small, and that is its gift. In a single unhurried week you can trek to mountain gorillas, find chimpanzees in an ancient rainforest, drive among the Big Five, and rest beside a great lake, with short transfers between each. It is clean, safe and welcoming, and the lodges are among the finest in Africa. We put the pieces together so the journey flows, with the right permits, the right camps, and a guide who knows the ground.

This is where Dian Fossey did her work, and where most travellers come to Rwanda. The forested slopes of the Virunga volcanoes shelter mountain gorilla families, and trekking up to spend an hour with them is among the most moving wildlife experiences anywhere. Rwanda has made it the most comfortable and accessible gorilla trek in Africa, with shorter transfers and some of the finest lodges on the continent waiting at the end of the day.

Nyungwe is one of the oldest montane rainforests in Africa, a dense green world alive with primates. Chimpanzees are the headline, but thirteen primate species live here, including large troops of colobus monkeys. A suspended canopy walkway carries you high into the treetops for a view few forests offer. It pairs beautifully with the gorillas, turning a Rwanda trip into a complete primate journey.

Akagera is Rwanda's surprise: a classic savanna park of lakes, plains and rolling hills, where lion and rhino have been reintroduced to complete the Big Five. After the forests it is a refreshing change of scenery and pace, with game drives and boat trips on the lakes. A remarkable conservation success story, it shows a different, wilder side of this small country.

After trekking, Lake Kivu offers somewhere to slow down. One of Africa's great lakes, it stretches along Rwanda's western edge with quiet beaches, island hops and gentle hills behind. It is the natural place to rest between the gorillas of the Volcanoes and the chimps of Nyungwe, and a reminder that Rwanda is as much about its landscapes as its wildlife.

Most journeys begin and end in Kigali, and it is worth lingering. Rwanda's capital is clean, safe and welcoming, with a growing food and coffee scene and easy charm. The Kigali Genocide Memorial is a moving and important place to understand the country's history and its remarkable recovery. It is a thoughtful start or finish to a Rwanda safari, and a city that quietly impresses everyone who visits.
