1.5 million wildebeest, 200,000 zebra and 300,000 Thomson's gazelle follow rainfall around the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem in an annual circuit. Nothing in nature compares for sheer scale.
Between July and October, the herds must cross the Mara River to reach fresh grass. Crocodiles wait. The wildebeest hesitate — sometimes for hours — then plunge in. It is chaotic, violent and extraordinary.
