The Ngong and Karen areas are where the white settlers set up their farms and made themselves at home in the early colonial ‘Happy Valley’ days. Today what remains are incongruous half-timbered houses and flowering gardens, which are more suited to Europe than Africa.

The Ngong Hills were immortalised in the book and film Out of Africa, where Karen Blixen (played by Meryl Streep) ran a coffee plantation.

The Ngong Hills are a series of low mountain ridges that run southwest to northeast for about 20 kilometers. The highest point is 2400 meters above sea level and offers stunning views of the Great Rift Valley, farms and Maasai villages. The Ngong Hills are popular with hikers, who come to enjoy the many walking trails that crisscross the area. There are also several campsites and picnic spots dotted around the hills.

The Ngong Hills are a great place to get away from the hustle and bustle of Nairobi and enjoy some fresh air and stunning views. There are plenty of activities on offer, or you can just relax and take in the beauty of this special place.

Ngong Racecourse

The Ngong racecourse which was once the social hub of colonial life in Nairobi, is now a popular spot for sunset drinks and Sunday brunch.

For those who would like to bet on horse racing, the Ngong racecourse is the place to go. There are several bookies located around the course and you can also place bets online.

The busy race day is every second Sunday for most of the year. If you prefer to ride a horse rather than bet on one, Talk to Us Today.

The Karen Blixen Museum, which is housed in the former farmhouse of the Danish author, is also located close to Ngong Hills in the Karen area. The museum offers visitors a glimpse into the life of one of Kenya’s most famous residents.
