Although just off the Bulawayo road and only 25 kilometres from Masvingo, Mushandike Dam is not on many tour itineraries.
This means you will have the antelope, zebras and leopards to yourself. Winter is the best season for scenic drives when the leaves of the Mopane trees set the forest aflame with their autumnal colours.
The Mushandike Sanctuary is a nice recreation, picnic and game viewing site. It has a wide array of predominantly plains game species playing around its 13,360 ha. There is also the Mushandike Dam that occupies 417 ha—visitors can go for boat-ride or try fishing here. The area is dominated by Brachystegia (miombo) woodland, open grassland and rocky outcrops allowing animals such as kudu, common duiker, sable, waterbuck, klipspringer, steenbok, Sharpe’s grysbok, tsessebe, blue wildebeest, impala and warthog to play around. Mushandike is also very rich in birdlife.
