Immediately south of Mombasa is Shelly beach – humorously named after the presence of shells. The area is quite built up and very much the homely sibling of its tropical southern sisters. The beach is narrow with large portions of exposed coral, and can also be littered with seaweed.
Another nuisance is that high tide seems to be the only time to swim safely here. The turn off is near the Likoni Ferry terminal, but unless you have a pre-arranged date here, we suggest you head straight for Tiwi or Diana.
