Durban
Durban Safaris
Durban is positioned on the country’s east coast. This vibrant seaside city has long been a favourite destination for local and foreign holidaymakers, with soft sandy beaches stretching as far as the eye can see.
Durban’s Top Attractions
During the Christmas season the Durban beachfront sizzles, as temperatures rise above 30°C! Don’t limit yourself to December or January, however, as the warm Indian Ocean together with Durban’s subtropical climate allow for year-round swimming, surfing and sunshine.
Apart from its beaches, Durban’s biggest drawcard is uShaka Marine World. Wander round the huge aquarium; watch dolphins leaping, splashing and somersaulting; gently wind your way round the park on a river tube or shoot down a high speed water slide. There is plenty to keep everyone happy, including shops, restaurants and a private beach.
Cultural Melting Pot
With a wonderful blend of Indian, African and European culture, this is probably the best place in South Africa to pick up Zulu crafts. All along the beachfront promenade you’ll find Zulu ladies selling hand-woven baskets and beautiful beadwork, while Zulu men wearing flamboyantly feathered head-dresses offer rides in brightly painted rickshaws.
Durban also has the largest Indian population outside of India and Pakistan. The Victoria Street Market (or “the Vic” as it’s locally known) is alive with the scents and scenes of the subcontinent, and the whole city is scattered with fantastic Indian Restaurants, and corner takeaway shops serving Bunny Chows (try one – we promise it’s delicious, and has nothing to do with bunnies).
City Tour and Safari
For most international travellers Durban is not just a destination in itself, but a convenient gateway for the attractions of KwaZulu Natal: game parks and reserves like the Hluhluwe Umfolozi Park, the wild beaches and coral reefs of the St. Lucia Marine Reserve, the Battlefields and the spectacular countryside of the Natal Midlands.
To give you an idea of KZN’s many attraction, have a look at the KwaZulu Natal Spa & Safari, designed with relaxation in mind. If you’ve got a bit more time, we’d highly recommend the Incredible KwaZulu Natal Collage: big game safaris, endless beaches, diving, snorkelling, gourmet getaways, spa treatments, historic battle sites, city life … it’s all up for grabs.
