Best Beaches In East Africa

Diani Beach, Kenya

With a flawless, long stretch of white-sand beach hugged by lush forest and kissed by surf waves, it’s no wonder Diani Beach is so popular. This resort town scores points with a diverse crowd: party people, families, honeymooners, water-sports enthusiasts and has been voted Africa’s leading beach destination four times running.

Diani also has some of the best beach resorts and accommodation in Kenya, from beach cottages, holiday homes to funky kitesurfing lodges and intimate romantic honeymoon spots. Most places are spread along the beach road, hidden behind a line of forest.

When lazing in a hammock gets tiring, visit the coral mosques with their archways that overlook the open ocean, venture into the sacred forests where guides hug trees that speak in their ancestors’ voices, or take in the monkey sanctuary – all are good ways to experience more of the coast than the considerable charms of sun and sand.

Lamu Beaches, Kenya

For a more bohemian and culturally interesting beach holiday head for Lamu and its surrounding islands. These small islands have a long and fascinating history with African, Arabic and Chinese influences, but today they are remote, almost forgotten bits of African beach paradise. Lamu is completely pedestrian friendly, and donkeys are the most popular means of transport. You can explore some of the island’s many beaches on a dhow boat, and these dhow tours are a huge part of the local economy. Back on dry land, make your way to Shela Beach on the northern side of Lamu. It’s a quick walk from the town of Lamu, and the coastline is made up of shells and sand.

Watamu, Kenya

Watamu beach is a paradise on earth, it is internationally renowned for its pristine white sand that slides gently into the shallow turquoise waters and its protected coral lagoons. It is part of the Marine National Park Reserve of Malindi, a marine protected area. Diving enthusiasts can explore the underwater fauna. Watamu is also an important nesting site for green turtles.

Nungwi, Zanzibar Tanzania

The Nungwi Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches of Zanzibar. It is located on the northern tip of the island. The Northern tip of Zanzibar is special. Unlike the East and West coastlines, the top island location is blessed by not having to deal with high and low tides.

This makes Nungwi a perfect place if you are looking to swim around the clock without have to walk far out to sea to chase the ocean there is no coral on the beach and the shallow sea makes this place an ideal place for swimming.

Tofo (Praia Do Tofo), Mozambique

Tofo beach stretches over 8 kilometers, and is located on the southern coast of Mozambique in the Indian Ocean. Tofo has beautiful grassy dunes, crashing waves. The weather is nice all year long. Similarly to the previous beach, Tofo Beach started as a fishing village. You can sit and enjoy a relaxing day on the beach, try scuba diving, surf the waves, or go horseback riding.

Something to note is 20km away from the beach, you can find Inhambane city, which is one of the oldest cities in Mozambique. While there we invite you to go visit its wide tree-lined streets, its ancient but also elegant style buildings.

A great way to experience Africa is to combine beach and safari holidays.
